What makes Carlito different

A vehicle that doesn't need a route

Some vehicles make a holiday possible. Others make a decision possible: move on today, or stay a week. Carlito belongs to the second kind.

The appeal isn't getting particularly far away — it's not missing anything along the way. 310 liters of fresh water, 720 watts of solar on the roof, 320 amp-hours of lithium underneath, a diesel heater, a fixed bed and a kitchen you can actually cook in. You're not dependent on campsites, power hookups or opening hours — just your own judgement.

That's exactly what changes how you travel. You stop moving from destination to destination and instead pull over where it feels right — waking up each morning at the spot you chose the evening before, not just wherever still had room.

Two build years, one vehicle

1990

Base vehicle

Iveco Magirus 120-23 with an air-cooled V8, permanent 4x4 and low range. A commercial vehicle from an era when technology had to be repairable, not connected.

2022

Expedition box

The living box is more than 30 years younger than the chassis: a fiberglass cabin on a spring-mounted subframe, interior fit-out by overlandtrucks.de, and electrical systems built entirely on Victron components.

The Base Vehicle · 1990

Iveco Magirus 120-23 AW

The chassis dates from May 1990. That's not a footnote — it's the actual reason this vehicle exists. Under the hood sits an air-cooled V8 diesel with 13.4 liters of displacement and 237 hp: an engine built for continuous load, not for brochure numbers.

The 4x4 is permanent, with low range and differential locks on the rear axle and center differential. Add 14.00 R20 tires on Jantsa rims and a CamperBricks tire pressure control system with an ARB twin compressor: for sand, washboard and difficult terrain, the pressure in all four tires can be lowered together and raised again for the road. The tires are connected via hoses while stationary, the target pressure is set, and the system regulates it automatically.

Not for everyone. And that's the point.

A vehicle this age demands attention in return — and a willingness to get your hands dirty. If that sounds like a drawback, a modern motorhome is probably the better fit.

But if you see it as part of the experience, you get something very different: a mechanically straightforward, immensely robust base built for a working life measured in decades, not product cycles.

The Planning

Every inch accounted for

Before anything was built, it was planned: the lift bed, sliding-door shower, fridge and seating area are all laid out to scale in the 3D plans. The result is a cabin where every angle is put to use — nothing guessed, everything measured.

Living on the Road

Home, just somewhere else

Seating area with table in the expedition box, warm wood tones

Living

The spot where you stay

A seating area 1,150 mm wide and a sliding table measuring 690 × 1,150 mm. The living area is the space that makes or breaks a rainy afternoon: sitting, eating, poring over maps — and feeling, come evening, that you've actually arrived.

Kitchen unit with sink and countertop
Cooking

A kitchen with its own supply

A 1,700 mm kitchen unit with a Phönix Domino-WGL gas hob, a queen-size sink and faucet. The 50-liter LPG tank supplies the hob only — heating and hot water run on diesel, which noticeably cuts your dependence on gas bottles abroad. Cooling is handled by a 12V Belluna compressor fridge, so no gas and no shore power needed.

Candlelight and wine at the table, view out the window
Camping stove by the window at dusk

Sleeping

Two beds, no converting

A fixed longitudinal bed measuring 70 × 180 cm and a Van7 lift bed measuring 140 × 200 cm that lowers to fixed-bed height. During the day, the lift bed frees up the space; in the evening, it's simply there — even if you arrive late.

Sink and shelving in the bathroom

Bathroom

Dry separation, wet shower

The 60 × 60 cm shower sits right at the entrance and doubles as a dirt lock — after a day on dusty roads, one of the most practical decisions in the whole build.

The Kildwick dry separation toilet uses a 15-liter urine tank with an electric drain valve on the outside of the cabin: no chemicals, no hunting for disposal stations.

Storage

Room for longer distances

Cabinets and compartments inside, storage boxes on both sides behind the rear wheels and two Zarges boxes on the roof rack outside. Tools, spare parts, supplies, gear: on long trips, storage space is what really determines how independent you are.

Self-Sufficiency & Systems

What's on Board

The onboard electrical system is built entirely on Victron components and monitored centrally through a Cerbo GX. Power supply, battery status and the key system values all come together in one place and can be checked at a glance at any time. That keeps the entire electrical infrastructure transparent, with the current state of the system always visible — even on the road. The relevant system data can also be viewed online and monitored remotely via VictronConnect.

Condition & History

In All Honesty

A vehicle from 1990 has a history. It belongs to the vehicle and is documented here in full — including known issues.

General Condition

Overall, Carlito is in well-maintained, used condition. The base vehicle shows wear consistent with its age and use. The living box and interior were built between 2022 and 2024 and are correspondingly much younger and in good condition. Known issues, as well as maintenance and repair work carried out, are listed separately below.

TÜV / HU (German roadworthiness inspection)

TÜV valid until 08/2026.

Maintenance & Service

  • 08/2025Engine oil change including filter
  • 07/2024Separ and diesel filter replacement

Repairs

  • 09/2024Gas linkage adjusted
  • 07/2023Rear right spring brake cylinder replaced

Modifications & Registration

Living box built in 2022, interior fit-out by overlandtrucks.de. In September 2024 the vehicle's registration class was changed from truck to motorhome. A toll exemption certificate is on hand, valid until 10/2026.

Tires

14.00 R20, Jantsa rims with Dunlop SP921.

Known Issues / Open Items

The installed Carasave system is currently unusable because the operator, Carasave, has gone insolvent. It will therefore need to be replaced with an alternative solution.

The second row of seats in the cab is not yet fully built out. This area was originally intended for a combination of a small office/workspace and an extra sleeping option. The buyer can complete this area individually and adapt it to their own needs.

The solar panels are currently glued to the roof using plastic mounts. A conversion to airline track rails with matching brackets is planned, and the brackets needed for this are already on hand. The conversion hasn't been carried out yet, but it isn't required for the solar system to function.

Carlito is looking for a new adventure

Carlito isn't a project vehicle that still needs finishing, and it isn't a mass-produced motorhome parked in every other driveway. The living box is from 2022 and has barely been used, the chassis is built to last, and the electrical system is built entirely on Victron components rather than pieced together. If you're looking for that combination, you probably already know exactly why.

Sold privately, with no warranty and no right of return. Viewings and test drives are possible any time by arrangement — and explicitly encouraged.
